I actually just got involved with a non-profit group that is trying to do this and more to help Long Island. It's more of mixed use, walkable downtown vibe neighborhoods that they are trying to develop. A place for young professionals to start out at before buying houses.
Long Island desperately needs not only affordable housing, but attainable housing. Housing to keep young professionals like myself and many of my friends on the Island.
Totally agree. Wish you and your group all the luck in the world. NIMBYs need to wake up and realize this isnt 1955. LI isnt a rural area its a metro area. Time to get with the times!

Thanks. I sincerely hope it succeeds. The group is a diverse collection of people (they have monthly meetings and the last one I went to had people from local civic associations, some young and former county legislators and councilmen, normal citizens like myself etc.)
Anyone is encouraged to join as they are looking for all kinds of people to be involved, not just big developers and people who don't know LI.
Detroit had manufacturing, very little manufacturing left on Long Island at all. Aerospace and electronics gone or so far gone what's left can be easily relocated.
I agree there is less but there is still manufacturing on LI. Canon just moved their USA office to Melville. There's 1800 jobs. I'm sure they got a nice tax break and we the tax payers will most likely feel it, but not all manufacturing is gone. With Grumman relocating it played a major part in increasing property taxes. I know people who lived in the industrial areas whose taxes were picked up by Grumman so they weren't paying what they pay now. Those days are long gone.
Nope. The Detroit bankruptcy will result in pension cramdown. Once the municipal workers union members see that they, will beg for 401k like retirement plans. Even if they only get a true up to the pension plans, the sheer amount of cash needed to do so will break the current system and force a change.
Essentially, municipalities around the country will face the real repercussions of running out of other people's money very shortly

While I don't think they will go out of business anytime soon having a camera company as a leading employer is risky these days. I think I'm one of the last people on vacation who use a digital (Canon) camera and not my phone for pictures.

You're not alone. We use our digital camera on vacations all the time and for other events. Phones don't always take good pictures and you can only take but so many. I found zooming really sucks on phone cameras too.
True, but mostly items that are racing to the bottom in costs (though DSLRs are doing fine). I think Canon will be around for quite awhile I just don't think they will be creating jobs to the level that Long Island will need.
I'm with you, I want a good zoom and flash at the very least.
I am a young person and everyone I know stays here and buys a house. Not sure what you are talking about.
