Not sure if this is the place for it, but many people use threads from ex pats as a launching pad to research possible areas for relocation. Nothing beats the brutal honesty of a LIer.
Ex Pats,
Nothing/nowhere in life is perfect. Could you share some things you don't like about your new location to give people a more realistic view, warts and all. Please something more substantial than the pizza/bagels suck
LIers have a different view than other people. Sharing the positives and negatives of your new area via the eyes of a LIer could be helpful to people looking at this forum who are considering LI and other areas.
1. There's alot more roadkill in NC.
2. The roads are pretty dark at night; there's definitely better lighting in NY. I try to avoid driving at night but then again I'm someone who dislikes driving in general so it probably doesn't bother most ex-LIers as it does me!
3. Teens can get their permits/licenses at a younger age which of course they love but it makes me nervous to think kids so young are on the road!
I love DE, my new home. I still love LI and always will but for this period in my life, here is better for us. One thing that is driving me crazy is the "Slower, lower Delaware" axiom as an excuse if someone does not show up or takes a come day, go day attitude in terms of getting something done.
I have been forewarned that during "hunting season" you better be patient!!!! HUH? I am learning or trying to learn to become more like the natives for my own sanity. I had my haircut and the cutter showed up 20 minutes late and said, "Oh I was so tired from working I just rolled over but I'm here now!!!" My first haircut with her took one hour and I have hair above the shoulder, I blamed it on her being nervous cutting my hair the 1st time. The cut was good so I tried her a second time that was the 20 minutes late time..... there will not be a third try.
Also Italian sausage and pizza and bagels.......sorely disappointing.
I live in same town as GPC and will add the roads can be annoying....we always say "everything is a darn circle"...you can leave your good sense of direction in NY because it wont work here!
Also...while the schools are good the transportation system sucks....always a big news story at the beginning of every school year. It is annoying waiting for the bugs to work out although nothing will probably top last year due to some bell schedule changes (which have been changed back thank God).
you can keep your piazza and bagels....there is NO NY style deli here-period. My DH misses that.
and of course...NJ transplants...ha ha just kidding!
If you are comfortable making your own dough, it's really easy and tasty to make your own pizza from scratch. If you use rapid rise yeast it takes about 40 minutes from the time the yeast hits the bowl until the first pie comes out of the oven.

Summers are a just bit too hot and it's a pain to grow a nice lawn. Beach is a little to far for a quick after work trip.
That's about it.
Food is excellent. Schools are excellent, COL and QOL are excellent.
I hate how it's not Long Island and how I don't need 6 figures to buy a starter house
