Thanks pequaman

The lawn service company mentioned they don't make money mowing lawns. I realize that, but I told him that is all I want. I would do it myself but I am not comfortable leaving my son in the house alone or playing in the yard when I mow.

He said he will mow and edge for 35 ..if I pay in cash.

Who cares about an online defensive driving course .... I want to know who pays a grand a year in HOA fees... Who sells a home in SC but proceeds to spend the next couple of months in a hotel in Richmond with a dog and a 3 yo because its the cheapest place they can afford.

Why are other poster 'setting the record straight' why DM the only two people on this forum the 'truth'? Why not tell all and set the record straight.

When one moves to NY,Fl,GA,CA,AZ,NC, or any other state in the US you have to get the exact same moving checklist done The Op has moved several times in her life but for some unknown reason was unprepared and sounded like a novice and still does. Even now it reads like poorly written reverse stereotypical L.I. Vs. the rest of the county but this coming from someone moving to L.I. Instead of moving from . So this is the reason the Op gets a pass from a few,but it was the other way around forget about it.

He/ She lived all over the Midwest and south and can't believe the trees have leafs and a full service gas stations, stop signs, tipping, can't believe everyone sounds the same must be some NY accent and she grow up in Ohio not Alabama.

To me, her blogs, diary or whatever you want to call this, sounds like a Martian crash landed on L.I. Than someone that has lived in multiple states and areas... Long Island is part of the US and people are people and homes are homes, we speak the same language, the big differences is it way more expensive to live. That's the culture shock not the people, gas stations, supermarkets or stop signs or traffic lights. Transfer rate as she called it lol.

This sounds like Mork from Ork, Mork calling Orson nanoo nanoo

Man we all want to be a believer but come on, who's the biggest fool on these threads? Think about that....

Kirk out!

The fact that there are openings at the preschools in August has nothing to do with declining birthrates. It's always been that way. In the city, some of the exclusive centers have wating lists, but there are plenty of openings at other schools. Many people here tend to wait until the last minute to enroll in preschools and the schools start to get bombarded with calls late August. Remember, schools here start later than in the south, after Labor Day, and preschools tend to start their fall programs a week after the public schools open.

The preschools do start later, but I don't know of any in my old town that would have had an opening except maybe a chain such as Sunshine House. It may be due to the booming population there. I am surprised that LI can sustain as many preschool/preks as they have here. Within five miles there are probably a dozen. Some people said there are not as many people with young kids moving into Nassau County. They may be incorrect.

For the other poster, check out HOA fees for some of the subdivisions in Mt Pleasant. You might look at Dunes West, Park West, Rivertowne, etc. I won't say where I lived but my guess is all three are well over a thousand. You do not get much. However subdivisions are huge and there is a lot of lawn maintenance, pond maintenance, outdoor tennis courts (there sre no indoor tennis courts in mt p) and swimming pools. All subdivisions there charge HOA, and some of the larger ones are quite high

Yes, the home owner insurance is much higher in mt p. My Wantagh neighbors were always talking about it. That would also be easy to check for accuracy with a quick call to an insurance agency. It was due to needing flood insurance, high wind coverage etc. it may have gone up after Hugo hit that area Howver that is just a guess. If so, those in areas impacted by Sandy may pay comparable insurance rates to Mt P now. I have no idea. A house valued at much less in Mt P is much more to insure there.

Lol, yes I see some HOA fees a little higher on those new multimillion dollar homes on pristine golf course or next to a beautiful beach rolleyes: but you said you lived in a 10 year old home valued in the high range of 200k and were paying 1,000 per year

Well you said you closed on July 12 in Merrick numerous times..... One of my best friends that I have know since 4th grade sells more homes Merrick then any other agent on the S.S. It's been awhile have to get him on the horn anyways and this guy is the ultimate resource guy there is modern technology and Emails go a very long way..

Enjoy the leaves and the stop signs, no mention of the sidewalks.... Thought that would've have blown your mind also

1. Supermarkets are abundant here. https://www.google.com/search?q=groc...res+merrick+ny
You've got trader joes, waldbaums, stop & shop, plus a king kullen in Bellmore. Plenty of options close by. Also, they do sell beer in case you were wondering because I know that might not be common in other areas.

2. Regarding the landscaper service -- beware of hidden fees. You might not be aware of this, but most landscapers will tack on extra charges (which can easily double your bill) for pesticides, lime, core aeration, etc. Make sure to ask them toward the end of the season if they are doing a fall cleanup (plus spring cleanup next season). These can easily run $200-$300 each service. They are most likely going to do it if you don't request them not to. If you have a lot of trees, it might be worth it. If not, you could probably get by without it and just rake up whatever falls on your property yourself.

3. The rude old fart you were referring to...some people just don't like kids and they won't hide it.

That's all I have for now. Good luck and congrats again.
OK, I'll make nicee nice cause it's Pequa. Agree about the "hidden" fees but they shouldn't be hidden. They should supply a contract that states what they will do and you agree to. I admit the treatments get pricey. It's a weird balance I worked out with them (he's a nice guy and lives locally). I got rid of trees and said no more $225 cleanups and he said "without the spring cleanup it makes them start with a mess and the weekly service is harder and he will charge more or it will look like he's doing a half-a$$ job" which I agreed with so we settled on a lower price for basic Spring clean and no fall cleanup. Same thing with certain chemicals. No weed treatment means they have to pull more weeds (or I have to spot treat them which is ok on the lawn but not so good in the flowers) so it needs to be addressed. Bug treatment? Up to me. I have found that when I let them do what they want within reason, everything looks better than I ever had it looking so I bite the bullet and pay the piper. I have a corner lot. Just mowing and edging takes forever and I do a crappy job cause I'm in a rush and I just hate doing it. It cuts into my CD forum policing time and that's not acceptable!

I haven't found this to be true. $750 is usually on the expensive side. And that's with a giant amenities center.

It's interesting to see you on the credibility policing side since it's usually the other way around with some of us doubting your credibility ... now you see what we mean sometimes?

Anyway maybe this lady's ex-husband took care of everything during the other moves in her life to other states and maybe she now has a fat check from him every month too -- so that is how she "affords" to buy a house in Merrick and fix it up right away. I know someone who didn't even know what her ex-husband made a year and just happily bought clothes, etc., like it was a competitive sport until divorce time when her lawyer ferreted it out ... she just let her husband take care of everything financial that was "serious" during the marriage. After she was divorced and had to do things herself she was surprised at a lot of things other people who were more in touch with taking care of such things thought were commonplace.

So I'm stuck contributing in the SC to Merrick vortex here. Which when I really think about it the pickings are slim... Grocery store in circles drama and everyone's cousin works in the service industry giving quotes?! Let's get the OP on the LIRR commuting into the city 5 days a week with ongoing forum updates. That could be huge.

... and goose - I voted worse! But really depending on your perspective it could be better - when viewed on the reality show watching car wrecks scale. The tension can be cut with a chainsaw sometimes.
And you just figured this out now?
