I just got my oil to gas conversion done and was wondering if a gas cut off switch is necessary. My oil burner had one at the top of the stairs as well as one on the burner. The plumber that did the conversion said i did not need one for the new gas furnace and that I only need the service switch attached to the burner now.

I just want to know before I close up the walls and remove the old switch at the top of the stairs....

Thanks!

You need two switches: one outside of the boiler room and one service switch near the boiler.

I converted two years ago. My cutoff switch for the oil burner now cuts off the gas burner. It's just a matter of reconnecting the switch.

so the inspector came out and said I did not need the emergency cut off switch for the gas at the top of the stairs anymore...
Only applies to gas furnaces...

The problem with only having one switch at the unit is if you need to shut it for an emergency you dont want to have to go into the furnace room in case of danger, much better to have both. as far as i know its code to have both based on Local Codes

You should have a cut off switch on the gas pipe close to accessibility. Also their should be a cut of that shuts off the main entering the residence.

OP...is your new gas furnace installed in a separate room in your basement?

The only time I never seen it at the stairs is when the basement was finished and the emergency kill switch was placed at the entrance of the furnace room. But what do I know, codes changed yearly.
