I had no idea that black squirrels were a different type. I thought they were just a mutation of a "regular" squirrel. There is a red squirrel that lives in Rufus King Park in Jamaica Queens. At least he looks much more red than any other squirrel I've ever seen.
True North American red squirrels are smaller than the gray squirrels we typically see. They are also very territorial and will throw things out of the trees at you!
Live in Brooklyn, but grew up on LI. where I never saw anyhing other than gray bushy tailed squirrels.
Used to drive up to White Plains for work everyday, and I noticed once I crossed the bridges into the Bronx
the squirrels were black, I had never seen black ones before. it has to be a Bronx/Westchester thing
There are black squirrels in Central Park and Washington Square Park, too.
