My kids are getting older and I have invested in a bike hitch for the truck...now just need some scenic bike trails to hit this spring/summer. Any suggestions on best places, preferably in Nassau, but willing to drive out to Suffolk as well, to go for a bike ride? Already regularly ride Cedar Creek-Jones Beach path and Massapequa Preserve up to Bethpage Park. Thanks in advance.

That list is lame. It wasn't until I moved off LI that I realized what little in the way of recreation/green space we had. LI is a suburban sprawl wasteland. Where I live know, there are parks everywhere, stocked with deer and wild turkey. Rail trails here go on for hundreds of miles, passing through scenic tunnels and over magnificent bridges. All of this isn't cheap to maintain, but (unlike Long Island) our taxes are less and aren't confiscated by the overcompensated teachers and firefighters.

The pathways at Hecksher park are really nice. I've taken my kids there and gone for a bikeride with them.

I don't think you're going to find many other scenic bike-only trails in Nassau. You can create your own somewhat scenic street rides though. Five Towns-Atlantic Beach-Long Beach Boardwalk is a good one. You can ride through a lot of nice areas with low traffic all over the north shore as well.

If you are near Queens, the NYC Greenway going from Jamaica to Kissena Park is fantastic.

We were just there at Heckscher this past weekend - just didn't like the $8 fee. The area was much nicer than I expected (don't listen to Yelp, use tripadvisor). Sunken Meadow is supposed to have a nice one also. We frequent Massapequa Preserve because we can feed the ducks too. You can always ride at Eisenhower but it's not really a scenic trail.

Discover Camping, Hiking, Mountain Biking & Other Outdoor Trails | AllTrails.com (look for the bike icon, not the downhill bike for mountain bikes).

Some of the state roads here have bike lanes. Dangerous as hell to ride on those though.

Caumsett State Park in Lloyd Harbor is beautiful! Many on and off road trails to bike or walk to the water. There are horse stables and a Manor House on the grounds too! There is an entrance fee but it is worth it for a beautiful day!
