We are a same-sex couple with two young kids, looking to start a life on Long Island. We've been looking through listings online and are getting overwhelmed with what towns to even look in. We need to be relatively close to NYC (within 1.5 hour drive I would say) and want to live in a town by the water on either North or South shore. We are hoping to buy in a slightly upscale neighborhood and can spend around $900,000-1.1M.

When I think of our dream neighborhood, I think of a lush area with lots of trees… homes with large properties… some local beaches nearby… family orientated… good school district… relatively quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the city… and so on.

Some towns we have seen nice houses in: Cold Spring Harbor, Bayport-BP, East Islip, Three Village area, Huntington, Centerport… We are open to anything

Any advice, insight, suggestions appreciated!

People don't care if you're a "same sex couple"-they just want quiet clean neighbors.

Head of the Harbor has some beautiful properties and you have identified a good number of nice areas already. There is always Lattingtown, Muttontown, parts of Locust Valley and Oyster Bay, On the South Shore, there are some beautiful homes in the Hewlett Bay Park ( Not to be confused with Bay Park) but that is a lot closer to NYC than the areas you have described.

I live in the 3V area. You would be welcomed. Also nuts2uiam suggested Head of the Harbor -- part of HoH overlaps with Stony Brook and is in 3V schools.

Yes, this. Have you checked out Northport or Sayville?

Depends. Some (many?) on LI can be downright parochial and would be worried about the example that "homosexuals" set for their children or some other nonsense.

I'm related to such people, they're still alive, and they live on LI.

Signed,

A gay guy

I would recommend that you look at an affluent area that's a bit more diverse, that's b/c ppl will definitely tend to be more open - minded there...

Dix Hills, Melville, Manhasset, Rockville Centre and Port Washington come to mind.

If you can afford a million dollar home, any of the areas you mentioned are nice. Keep your lawn neat and don't harass the little league umpire and no one (ok, someone will but screw them, they will be inconsequential) will care if you are Martians let alone 2 mommies or daddies. Good luck.

Let's not forget Huntington
Definitely close to water, treed, large properties available in your price range, LOTS of beaches in the area, etc. and your lifestyle is generally not an issue.
Individual neighbors can always be an exception, no matter where you are.
