We just bought a house in New Hyde Park. It was built in 1943. On doing the final inspection, I noticed that the upstairs bedrooms did not have ceiling lights. They do have wall switches though.
Also noticed that the living room does not have a ceiling light, but has a wall switch.
How much is it going to cost to have an electrician install ceiling lights on the first floor (living room) and 2nd floor (4 bedrooms). Wish I had noticed this earlier, but you assume that rooms have light fixtures.
I'm not sure if there's wiring installed already. If not, to get an electrician to run the wiring should cost a lot, I think. For the 1st floor liiving room, I assume they will have to make a hole in the ceiling and then have someone else cover up the hole.
For the 2nd floor, I assume they would run the wiring from the attic. I see no way to get up to the attic, although I know there has to be crawl space up there. I can tell from looking at the roof from outside.
You have a switch controlled outlet in those rooms which was used to turn on a lamp in those rooms. You will pay approximately $100 to $150 per hi hat. Consider installing ceiling fans with light packages in the bedrooms and you may save a little on installation depending on size of room and number of fixtures needed.
The ceilings are pretty low on the 2nd floor, so I cannot do that. Theres already a celing fan in the den and kitchen on the 1st floor, which have light fixtures attached to them. The only room on the 1st floor that has a ceiling light is the dining room.
I will have to install lights in the bedrooms. The 2nd floor hallway does have two ceiling lights, so I'm guessing they do have wiring.
Wish I had noticed this earlier, but what can you do. First time homebuyer.
Wherever the electrician can't get access (1st floor ceiling) he will make small holes or "notches" to run the wires around the joists which are easily repaired with some spackle.
An experienced electrician can do this without making a huge mess and minimal repairs. Ask around with your new neighbors. Won't cost an arm and a leg. A minor expense in the scheme of things and you'll be happy you did it.
The size of the hole made generally will be covered by the canopy (plate that snugs up to the ceiling to cover the hole) so that should not be a concern. FWIW my LI home did not have ceiling fixtures in the living room or our upstairs bedrooms but all had switches that turned lamps on.
