My neighbor is complaining that the squirrels are jumping from the tree in my yard, onto his roof and causing damage to his roof.

The tree branches do hang over his property. Are we responsible for trimming the tree to help him with the squirrel problem. We have no problem with him trimming it if he wants but really don't want to incur the cost. I can't help what the squirrels are doing.

Check the city ordinance for your area and see what the requirements are.

I believe the neighbor can cut the tree back to the property line without your permission but has have it done so it does not kill the tree.
It is best to check the legality of it though then proceed from there.

My understanding is that your neighbor is responsible for cutting the part hanging over his/her yard.

I agree, not your responsibility.

Not your responsibility but if you like the tree you may want to consider hiring someone to trim it correctly. He could hire someone to cut it right back to property line leaving it an eyesore.

Yup he can trim the tree but he can't damage it.

Take pictures of it now.

If he hires someone they will probably be fearful of botching the job. If he does it himself who knows how it will turn out.

A good neighbor would split the cost. Remember the neighbor can also choose not to trim it then sue you later on if tree damages your house.

Jumping squirrels causing damage to his roof? Does your neighbor live in a gingerbread house or a straw one?

^ LOL.
My neighbor complains that my Rose of Sharon trees drop seeds onto his side of the fence. He wants me to get rid of them (there are 3) and I told him that if he wants them gone, he can replace them with 6foot Arborvitaes. A lot of them!
Shut him up quick.

He can trim whatever is in his yard..but yes I would ask him to have it done professionally and split the cost.
