The speed camera idea in itself isn't a bad one. There doesn't seem to be that many issues elsewhere in the state where it has also moved forward. The way it has been implemented by the county, however has been a disaster.
No surprise there. Anyone will do anything they can to sway votes! Wonder why they did not try this sooner. Hmmm? Could it be they are lying possibly? LOL
Speed Cameras
The Nassau County Legislature held a special meeting on Thursday, April 17 to vote on the “Home Rule” message regarding the speed camera legislation. They voted unanimously to approve this measure, requesting that the New York State Assembly and State Senate approve the speed camera bill.
Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature Norma Gonsalves echoed Tirino’s words at the previous meeting, stating that the speed cameras would help protect not only children going to school, but crossing guards as well. She described a crossing guard working in her district who was critically injured on the job last year by a driver who was speeding through a school zone, and how the speed cameras could help prevent tragic accidents like this in the future. She said, “The major factor in this vote is safety – safety first – and the benefit of the revenue, but in our heart, we know that safety is the major issue.”
Minority Officer of the Legislature Kevan Abrahams stated that Nassau County is on the wrong path financially, and needs more than just speed camera revenue to turn it around.
The title is misleading. They're calling for a temporary stop to the program until the proper signage is put in place notifying people of speed cameras.
Keep in mind that every single democrat voted the cameras in. Some republicans opposed them.
Also keep in mind that democrats blocked the funding for the signs that they are now complaining are missing.
"We want all the tickets dismissed, the ending of the program and money returned," said Ned Newhouse of Woodbury. "This is a money grab, pure and simple."
