Forgot my pass today and I know the policy, so i payed for a ticket on train and didn't complain. But really, why no smartphone tickets like the airline industry has had for years? Job protection? The conductors can still do their thing with a scanner, so what is holding this back!?

what's it going to cost riders for this upgrade? Obviously it's going to require some kind of network (ie. can't use the same barcode twice).

Although I've never tried, you can take a picture of your mail-n-ride pass which has your name on it with your phone and show the conductor the picture along with ID. Maybe they will let it go.

I rode a 50 years old train to work today with filthy smelly bathrooms, duct tape on seats that arrived 20 minutes late. Electronic tickets is low on totem pole.

I believe advance technology will eliminate some LIRR employees. The union prefers LIRR be backward and lead us to believe we need 3-4 six figure highly skilled employees on each train 24/7.

Because they make a nice little fee every time your forget to buy your ticket at the station or kiosk.

It took how many years for the NYC Subway to change from tokens to MetroCards? And now that system is being replaced.

Replacing the ticket process isn't a priority for the LIRR right now because 'it works'. Their priorities are on capital improvements and the East Side Access.

The LIRR doesn't have fare controlled platforms (meaning that you can get on the platform without buying a ticket). Even if they were electronic, the conductors would have to go through the train to validate each ticket/barcode/etc. I can't imagine how long that would take on a full train with 5% of the passengers having some sort of cell phone problem and another 5% having a phony receipt .JPG on their phone that they're trying to use as a ticket.

When will MTA/LIRR get with the times and have electronic tickets?
When we have an entirely electrified system, get rid of hole punchers, and actually accept cards on board trains.

When East Side Access is done.

Never.

Metrochip!

Operated similar to EZPass with tolls being charged against the account with periodic credit card replenishment, a small Metrochip implanted in the rider will be scanned as the user boards and leaves the train and will calculate fares based on zones and time of day.
