Hello all, we are plan to relocate to Long Island.
My office is in Old Westbury. With two kids in elmentary school, we are trying to find a good school disctrict within our budget ($800k, 15k tax). we would want to have 2000+ sqft, 3+bedrooms.
It seems we could not find houses in Roslyn, Jericho,Syrosset in our budget, any other recommendations?
Plainview seems to be Jewish town (we are Asian, do not know if we can fit in). How about Half Hollow Hills (Melville, Dix Hills)? or other towns that are still not too difficult to communte, I do not want to driver over 30 min each way.
Have you looked at Baldwin? You could definitely find houses that fit your budget/description. It's diverse (with a growing Asian population), and the schools are pretty good.
Herricks SD, East Williston SD, Garden City SD, Rockville Centre are all great districts. You'll get more house for less money in Herricks SD. That district is fantastic and has a large Asian population. Half Hollow Hills ranks well, but I heard they use metal detectors. That would be a turn off for me.
Half of the kids in the rich north shore districts are injecting heroin needles into their veins as we speak and you're worried about metal detectors?
Be glad that some of the districts are taking extra precautions, especially after the Newtown CT massacre
Drugs and guns are two different issues. Kids are taking drugs everywhere, money or no money, north or south shore. And a metal detector wouldn't have prevented that massacre in Newtown. The only time districts spend money for those detectors are when an issue has presented itself.
Thank you all. Comapred to the hourse in Houston where I am living now, those houses in LI are just so small and old, except to pay over $1m.
Is the communte from Dix Hills to Old Westbury acceptable? Seems Dix Hills would give a little more room with the budget.

All our friends from Texas say the same thing you say. My advice is to stop comparing, or you'll never get into home buying mode. Because nothing on Long Island will ever compare to what you can get in Texas, dollar for dollar. With Dix Hills you could take the Northern State Pkwy or the 495 to Old Westbury. It'll be longer than 30 min, as it's about 25-30 without rush hour traffic.
why do asians all need good school districts? not to start trouble but what is the difference, it is just elementary school or HS who cares. Nothing you learn if of much value anyhow

How many Asian Hertz rental agents or pizza delivery guys do you know? Is your question serious?

I believe it is the cut of your jib that gets you far in life not where you went to elementary school.
