Who remembers Fred Trump, who was responsible for building much of NYC's suburbia? Did he have the same flair for self-promotion as his son?

Fred Trump and his wife were really nice down to earth people. They lived in Jamaica Estates and used to do their own grocery shopping at the supermarket on Union Tpke by St. John's

I was friends with a few girls who used to work the register there and they would be very nice and used to bag groceries there own groceries to help the girls out. Mrs. Trump cooked her own meals for her and her husband. No cooks or nonsense.

Great People nothing like Donald.

Fred started with a single two family house and owned like 3,000 garden apartments around the Queens area so he was a very wealthy man himself all self made.

I don't know his father but I remember his mother when she almost got robbed. Someone tried to robbed her at gun point when a woman intervened. Trump located the good Samaritan and found out they had mortgage on their home so he paid off the balance.

What I've read about Fred Trump is that he is the polar opposite of his son. He was a old-school, self-made man. Donald was able to go to all the good schools like Wharton and also because his dad was in the same business, Donald also had connections and contacts. No matter what kind of person "The Donald" is, he does have that talent for self-promotion and it has brought him very far - I have to admit that.

Is it true that Fred Trump's father died in the Spanish Flu outbreak?

He certainly wasn't as flamboyant as his son. He built developments for the middle class.

You should probably post your question in the NYC forum. To my knowledge, Trump senior didn't build on Long Island.

Since that was in 1918, I think it's highly unlikely.

I must have confused him with another wealthy businessman. A lot of famous people, or ancestors of today's celebrities, died in the Spanish Flu. We hope we never get another pandemic like that, but with today's air travel it is probably just a matter of time, very scary.

Fred Trump was born in 1905. Why would his father's death in 1918 (if that's when it was) have been unlikely from whatever cause?
