Is it too late to put myself on a list for a cabana? I know some of them have LONG wait lists but not so much with others. Has anyone done this? What is the process like? Is there a list of beaches that have cabana options?
Just call a bunch of the Atlantic beach clubs. There will be availability somewhere. I got a spot at Clearwater (I admit, it's not the fanciest) last March or April. Other clubs also had availability. The beach clubs are more similar than they are different, honestly.
If you live in the Town Of Hempstead call the town and ask about being added to the list. The wait time used to be longer but they are a bit pricey as compared to years ago so the list has become a lot shorter. Family members have a place in Malibu.
Nickerson beach is pretty easy to get into. Then Malibu is a bit harder but not like the old days. A regular cabana at Malibu is about 4800 for the season. Some of the Atlantic Beach cabanas are close to 10k and have minimum food and beverage purchases for the season.

It doesn't have to be fancy. I need sand and a place to park my stuff. I'd probably split it with a few friends.

Call Clearwater. I bet they have something. No minimum food purchases or anything like that. They are generally cheaper than the other clubs on Atlantic Beach. They have a good pool, too.
We were members of Catalina (Atlantic Beach). There is most likely no wait list as these days, people swinging $11K may not be too easy. The facilities are great and well kept. The ONLY reason who chose not to sign up again was due to the rude management staff. The main women goes away in August and leaves the everyday responsibilities to someone who has the worst attitude. We parted ways as i would rather spend my money elsewhere. I have heard excellent things about Silver Pointe and it is a lot cheaper as well.

I think rudeness or at least eccentricity is par for the course when dealing with a lot of these places.
We looked into switching from Clearwater to Catalina or Sunny Atlantic for this coming season but decided not to because overall they were quite a bit more expensive than Clearwater. In some ways Catalina was "nicer" than the other clubs, but at the end of the day, the beach is all the same and the actual cabanas and lockers are far more similar than they are different.
In addition to the fees for the cabanas themselves, the various clubs have different policies regarding parking, sharing, and additional cabana users that, depending on your situation could make different clubs a better value than others.
Silver Point is the cheapest of all and people who go seem to really love it. I visited Silver Point but I did not go with them because the cabana and locker facilities are REALLY far from the beach and the place was too sprawling for our tastes. But again, people who go there like it a lot! The people we spoke to there were nice.
