Agree.

PJ Station, too, in my opinion.

That fun space between Shirley and Riverhead called Manorville and Calverton, especially north of the LIE and east of CR 111. There are some places there that would have sucked to have your car break down at, especially in the era before cell phones.

Wow, descriptive. That added so much to the thread. Where do you get your vast wealth of knowledge from? I must know.

Totally agree with the East end bit though, (aside from the Hamptons and NOFO of course), although Springs section of E. Hampton is nothing to write home about, pretty bumpkin-y IMO. Calverton really hits home with the upstate vibes, farms and all...
Nothing against KP, I love it. Just wish there was a bar that wasnt an irish townie bar. Calverton for sure.

What kind of vibe are you looking for? Upstate has a variety...

Ellenville/Kerhonkson... Down home folk (a little too downhome for some). Mom and Pop stores and restaurants, fewer chains, etc... Riverhead might give this vibe.

Woodstock... Artsy, 60's never left, art and theatre scene, etc... Huntington comes to mind that gives a similar vibe.

New Paltz... College town, athletic outdoorsy, students, rock jocks and climbers (Shawangunks and Minnewaska just up the road). Can't really think of an Island town that captures all of this.

Rhinebeck/Millbrook.. Upscale and tony without the pretense... Setauket/East Setauket/ Port Jeff come to mind for that vibe on the Island.

Lake Placid... Former two time Olympian, ski mountain, ski jumps, bobsled run, major outdoor sports town.. The Island could do it if all the sanitation departments consolidated and dumped the trash in ONE location creating a giant landfill mountain with slopes, ski jumps and bobsled. All we need is a town to volunteer....
