I work at Stony Brook and am beginning the search for a house in the area. Does anyone know if there are town beaches that allow dogs on or off leash? I'd like to live somewhere I can walk my dog on the beach early in the AM. Most of the time I've been able to get a definitive answer, it's a flat "no dogs allowed" policy. Does this vary at all from hamlet to hamlet? Is it always enforced?

The town had started cracking down on dogs at West Meadow Beach; I don't know about other town beaches along the north shore of Brookhaven.

The farther out East you go, the more open they are to dogs on the beaches. You'll be able to walk your dog on the beach (off leash) in Sound Beach, Rocky Point, and Shoreham without a problem. Especially if you find access to the private areas (and you will, there are many). The formal beaches have rules but I'm not sure what they are as I don't frequent them.

When I lived in Rocky Point, we took our dogs on the beach all the time. It had been a while, I wasn't sure of the current status.
New York has a leash law and no more free bites.
I go bezerk on dog owners there animals run amuck. I have dogs get wet and "shake off" mud and sand fleas on people and camera gear.

Thanks for the response. The more I learn about the area, the more Sound Beach (and surrounding communities) sound like the best match for me.
A funny "Dog at the Beach" story... my apologies to Roast Beef who will may laugh but will be skeeved.
I had my dog (a calm Golden) on a leash at Teddy Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay several years ago - it was early in the season and the beach was lightly populated. Yes, I know I should not have been there.
I was on the paved sidewalk... nowhere near the water where he could shake on everyone when I saw a woman look at me with a look that could kill. She got up and stormed over to the lifeguard and then pointed to me. I could see that she was NOT HAPPY - I could not hear her, but I could see by the way her mouth moved the way her finger wagged that she was rather angry. You could picture the scene in a movie... especially what happened next.
Just as the lifeguard turned to look at us, man's best friend decided to relieve himself (#2) with the biggest loaf I'd ever seen him lay. (sorry to be graphic, but the mere size of the object is what made it extra-funny).
I grabbed my poop bag and scooped it up within a mili-second of it hitting the ground and disposed of the offending object in the garbage.
"Time to go" I told my wife and we left. Timing is everything.
