Selective bias, maybe? Like when people are asked to talk about something, they tend to focus on the negatives then the conversation takes a downward spiral (kind of like with some posters in this thread ).
As for the main street, I've never seen it but if it is indeed run down then perhaps it is time to tear it down since it is no longer needed. It looks like Smithtown people do their shopping online or in malls/strip malls and chain stores anyway.
I wouldn't exactly call downtown Smithtown rundown. Definitely no need to tear it down.
Drug map is very interesting but also misleading. Drilldown on the info and you see that traffic stops are registered where the stop occurred, not where the people arrested lived. Towns with heavy traffic and major roads get higher drug arrests.
Also of note with the drug map, particularly in regards to Smithtown: they double-count the arrests made at the 4th precinct between Smithtown and Hauppauge, so there's actually fewer crimes in the 4th then is on the map.
