That is the best way to see the parade and under those conditions, it's definitely worth it.
I've driven in a couple of times for Thanksgiving. Might do it again this year. If you're on the road in the early AM, maybe 7ish, you should be fine. Never had any problem on the east side on Thanksgiving. In fact, it's was unusually quiet because everyone was on the west side of Fifth.
An update if anyone reads this in the future... Left Garden City at 7AM sharp, made it to my parking garage in Metlife/GC at 7:40AM (spothero is your friend for decent rates). The parade was awesome, especially from my location Going back, no issues. We stayed until the end (Santa). Getting back to GC was a bit crowded, but traffic not a big deal except some traffic on the Queens/Nassau border.
Glad that you had a good time. Hope the kids really enjoyed the experience. If you live in the NY area, it's something to do at least once in your lifetime. I've always enjoyed watching it on TV more, but that's because it's right here and we take it for granted. It's great for kids to see the "live action version."
And, they need to bring back King Kong and Mighty Joe Young.
The original black and white versions, none of that colorized crap.
The Wizard of Oz was always scheduled over the Thanksgiving holiday, too.
