Yikes so during rush hour commute is at least an hour each way?
At least..on a good traffic day not considering volume, snow, rain, road repairs and accidents. If you start work at 8am you would have to leave 7am everyday......and hope. Just watch traffic channel at both morning and afternoon rush hour..that will give you a good idea where you'd be spending hours a week.
When I worked in Uniondale the people I worked with who lived out in Suffolk used to take the Meadowbrook to Ocean Parkway to the Sag to get home. Longer mileage-wise but they saved a lot of time. Not sure if this is an option, but yeah, that's a hella commute.
Islip. I live there now and was working in Hempstead. I hated the commute but Islip was the farthest we could go at the time. DH was working In Bayshore. Now I work in Farmingdale and my commute is 15 minutes. I just take sunrise to 109. I don't even have to deal with the Southern State Parkway. However I did take Ocean Parkway a lot because there was never any traffic. I would leave for work at 8:15 am and get to my job in Hempstead by 9 am but if weather was bad or an accident sometimes I would get to work by 9:15. Always called my boss to say I was going to be late. I don't miss that commute at all.
Thanks, I'm glad I asked here because whenever I checked Google maps it said 38 min. I'm disappointed because I thought I found a great town for moving. Stony Brook seemed to fit everything I was looking for from my research. We may have to move to LI and I'm freaking out about it. The high schools in my area are considered pretty good, but the top ones don't even come close to the top high schools in Nassau. I'm afraid of the intensity of a too highly ranked school, but I still want a good school district. I also want an area that has a decent amount of Asians. Stony Brook seemed to fit the bill, including other elements like good housing prices and walkability of a town area for kids to bike to.
It will be a rough commute during rush hour. 38 min would be off peak......
Commack may fit your needs.
