I am also extremely close with my godson, growing up he came to me with any of his problems/issues - feeling more comfortable with me than his parents.
Now at 30, he continues to come to me monthly to help him out. Guess I just provided a crutch for him all those years.
In reality I should have stopped it once he became an adult and I believe he would have learned to step up and be responsible for himself.
If this helps at all

I mean I feel obligated and want to help him but also feel that's his responsibility. I mean if he was in trouble or in a real bad spot I would give it to him in a second. I actually did that for my niece about a year ago when she HAD to get some money together for something. We all pitched in.

Not sure how to explain this to him or what to do. I'll probably give him $1k although I need that myself..lol

Thanks
Lend him the grand, and tell him if he doesn't pay back by a certain time you'll be calling Judge Judy

And you want interest

That's how the banks do it right

Giving $$ is enabling, that's the thing. He needs to figure this out on his own.

Hofstra will easily give him a job.

Never loan family money......just asking for a problem.

If you want to help, give him $200 as a gift.

Then you've been perceived as someone easily parted with their money. How's about you ask him for a loan to pay down your debt?

Le me guess. Your nephew is George Costanza.

Tell him to look into becoming a dorm assistant; that ought to net him a grand or two per semester. Or perhaps a TA - that pays too. IMHO let him pay his own way and stand up on his own 2 feet. Don't fall for any sob stories.
