This CBS report on the Hempstead School District's Board of Education highlights why even having a group of members who claim to have the kids' best interests at heart can be nothing but a facade. The district graduates only 37% of its seniors so they were given a chance to turn it around by hiring someone with the resume and history to do so. Instead, the board votes, via "majority", to oust him citing BS reasons as he uncovers the truth behind what really happens to the money which never reaches the children.
How are we as residents (of any district) legitimately supposed to keep this power in check when they have the backing of other corrupt board members and voters? We can't. This whole system is easily gamed, so don't tell me it's my fault for X, Y, or Z problems in my district. These adults are put in place so we don't have to babysit every little detail yet they can't be honest when they have full reign of the cookie jar. Especially to some on this forum, blame is put on residents instead of these people when "collective bargaining" turns out in favor of giving them more money. So a governing body needs to be governed themselves? What a joke the entire set-up is.
Watch the whole thing and you'll get the big picture. Or at least watch from the 40-min mark.
Bad homes make for bad students and bad school districts. Doesn't matter who you hire or how much money you spend.
In the video, they also mention that Uniondale graduates something like 78%. Big difference, but not as far as demographics. So what you state is untrue, or at the very least, not that simplistic.
The investigation also uncovers that the superintendent in charge (removed by the do-gooder and now re-hired by the almighty board) claimed his Ph.D from a degree mill, a school that's not even accredited. The corruption starts at the top.

Uniondale is not even anyway near as bad as Hempstead, so your way off with this.

Agreed Uniondale isn’t a great area but no where near Hempstead, however similar areas like Roosevelt and Wyndanch are around 70% (lower amongst males).

Graduation rates aren't a good metric in any event. Schools are pressured to lower standards to increase their pass rates, which is why tons of high school graduates are barely literate.
On the flip side, there are districts like Jericho that juke the numbers via other trickery. Yeah, Jewish and Asian families tend to raise kids who excel at school, and those AP numbers look great until you realize that they're just the number of kids in AP classes and not the number of kids that even take the AP exam none the less get a 3 or higher necessary for college credit. Also helps when you offload all your special ed kids on the district next door (Syosset).
^ Regardless of graduation rates, the crux of the issue is the school board and their power. Their willingness to sweep things under the carpet to line each others' pockets. Such as the coincidence with the building fire where all their records were kept right before an audit was coming. 2 out of 5 members being clean resolves nothing due to majority votes. This is how they ousted a new superintendent who had all the intentions of turning such a district around. The investigative report containing video of what goes on among the school board is pretty eye-opening. This shouldn't simply be a racial/demographic debate when there's a larger issue for all to see here.
Unfortunately it totally is a race issue. Black vs hispanic. The elections are contentious and crooked and divided into voting blocs. The taxpayers/residents have no one but themselves to blame. They keep the same obstructionist morons or bring them back every time a new board (ehem, hispanic...sorry to say it, but it is what it is) comes in and tries to reform the schools. The current crooked board has gone through 20 business admins and supes in 20 years. Any one who tries to make real change goes out on a rail...still being paid their contract (see the current Supe, lawsuits and all). The common denominator is the current board majority (1 of whom is under indictment for forging his Hempstead PD application, now on desk duty). They either don't care about the kids or are just totally inept about how to run a school district. Or both.
