Well with no need to pay Amazon the 2+ billion incentive that should shore up Andy's budget...
That 2.5 billion doesn't exist. 500m was from the state. And 2.5b was reduction in taxes. That's the best part these politicians claiming the state saved 3b. 2.5b doesn't exist. I'm excited for LIC, gentrification is still going to happen more. Small cheap buildings will be torn down for luxury buildings. The poor will be pushed out still. They won't have big bad amazon.
This is why sometimes I think the moronic structure of LI is good. Our high taxes and lack of affordable housing is a good thing. I don't want these people who think 25k high paying jobs are a bad thing living in my neighborhood. If these politicians had there way we would integrate westbury and Jericho schools to help the low income folks. Luckily that can't happen due to our structure. (I don't live in Jericho)
does anyone out there think that if Amazon stayed and received the 3 billion plus incentive, other large companies would hold NYC hostage before cutting deals ? Or that existing companies would threaten to leave without an incentive to stay ?
Methinks yes.
Yes it's bad they are not staying, but this may have started a precedent that, lets face it, NYC and NYS cannot afford .
You think any employer who has created 25,000 jobs for the city and/or the state - isn’t going to receive enticement to stick around anyway? That’s how it works. If the city/state don’t play that game well, then places like Raleigh, Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, Indy, Philly, and yes DC, are quick to pounce with enticement to lure a big ticket employer to their state instead. That’s exactly what happened to NJ when NC came lurking and snagged a notable piece of MetLife..
Do you guys know that Amazon has in the last couple years greatly increased their headcount outside of just fulfillment centers without this campus? Nearly all of its competitors have done the same and are still doing so and it's unlikely they'll stop. However, it's also unlikely they'll be greatly expanding any operations outside of potential fulfillment centers in Long Island and that'll continue to be the case unless Long Island does a better job of developing its urban commercial centers.
One thing I'm curious about is what is the most viable urban area of Long Island that can potentially be developed as a much stronger employment base? Where in Long Island has frequent mass transit so that it can even act as a draw for the tech talent that NYC keeps on producing and attracting?
I wonder if Boston University wants the degree they granted AOC in Economics back.
