How do the schools in these towns’ schools compare? Are there more than 1 district/town which I should be aware of? I.e. If these towns have multiple districts is one area better than another?
Buy a 1M house with a nice plot of land on the Vanderbilt peninsula in Centerport, walk to the beach, send your kids to Harborfields, and don’t overthink it.

Just make sure you don't buy a house too close or within a view of the Northport stacks

I guess a handful of Centerport waterfront homes/mansions on the east side of the Vanderbilt peninsula might see the tops of the red and white Northport stacks 5-ish miles away. But that’s a different price range, just a handful in any case, and doesn't seem to affect sales. 1M won’t get you one. Not an issue for the OP.

Who knows maybe the OP might like it but you're right only a handful of houses can actually see them. If there were stacks I wouldn't want to see, it would be the stacks at the generating station in Barnum Island (more commonly known as Barnum Island). Also if you're in Barnum Island, some houses can see those 2 stacks and the former Oceanside landfill

She already said she doesn’t care about being close the to the water. Probably not worth the aggravation of getting and to and from and navigating those streets in winter.
I’d look in the Salem area of Greenlawn. Close to Greenlawns downtown and Huntington and Huntington train station. Harborfields schools.
Be careful of school district dividing lines around this area of LI. You can drive down a street and it’s CSH at one end or one side and Huntington on the other. Verify every address with the school district it’s supposed to be in. I grew up RIGHT on the dividing line - my Huntington bus drove right by CSH kids waiting for theirs.
But the requirement of a “prestige” factor when that means different things to different people is by far the silliest factor of any I’ve ever heard. Some people aren’t going to see anything but a name like Lloyd Neck as prestigious and others will see Massapequa PARK as prestigious because it is not plain old Massapequa. Peoples’ knowledge is also often limited. Finally playing to other peoples’ opinions is a sure recipe for never being happy anyway.
