I really do believe you get what you pay for. I also know that for some ppl (my hub & I) our QOL is much better here than almost anywhere else. Both of us would have to take pay cuts so badly anywhere else that it would be cheaper here if u compare income to cost of living. Theres no black & white.
My in laws are out in CA. Their taxes are much cheaper. They also dont have schoolbuses & garbage pick up.
I see no reason to leave here unless I absolutely have to ... & even then, I’ll leave kicking & screaming
I felt the way you did. To this very day, I also am unabashedly a huge supporter of LI. I was born there, and lived there for all but 2 years of 59. It was a great place to grow up and live. However, things change, most especially the family dynamic. For us, we were not blessed with kids and for several friends the kids moved away. When we got to 59 we thought long and hard about what was important to us and for us it was the draw of the water. We could have stayed on LI and bought in Pt. Lookout, but to live the life we envisioned we would have had to stay working for a few more years and that would have changed the life we had envisioned. The other alternative was to simply be happy living by the beach and forget our other ideas. So we decided at 59 to pull up stakes and move.
We now have the life we want and for the past 8 years are enjoying our retirement. We both still love LI and miss siblings and friends but for us, we are very happy with our decision to leave. This is how I will explain it. For us, at this time of our life, we are now in the best place for us.
The beaches are better in MA CT and RI + FL on the south.
No, they are not.
Almost all the beaches in Connecticut are on the Sound, not the ocean. Many people from CT actually travel to other states for the ocean beaches - including Long Island.
Florida probably has more beaches then all the states you mentioned (including NY) but the sand? I think it is partially some kind of limestone. Florida does have the weather and the palm trees but that does not necessarily make its beaches better. I will take Fire Island over Miami anyday.
Most of the Massachusetts and at least part of Rhode Island are exactly the same kind of beach as Long Island. Cape Cod, Long Island, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Block Island were created by glaciers during the last ice age. They are part of the "Outer Lands" region.
All along the east coast, from LI to Florida, if you stand on the beach, 20 feet from the water and only look out at the ocean you’d never know where you are.

except from long island sound and northward, where you have boulder beaches.
anything jersy & south is just sand. no bluffs either
LI has some of the nicest beaches, full stop ... & I know I’m not the only one who thinks so.
LI got her probs, sure, but it’s a pretty great place to live
