This is the easiest answer, although I don't think it's necessarily the correct one. Certainly Big Pharma does, and always has, had outsized influence on politicians and regulatory agencies. Many industries do. But this goes beyond that.

I think what happened is that the TDS crowd, who spent 2015-2020 completely whipped up by the media, latched onto a new moral panic - call it Covid Derangement Syndrome - and have run with it to provide a new target for their neurosis. And the media was all too happy to help. This explains why polls show the CDS crowd (which is primarily Democrats) hold wildly inaccurate views of the danger of Covid such as death rates, hospitalization rates, vaccine effectiveness, the risk to children, etc.

Of course that's a part of it too, but asking "who benefits" from these actions, financially or politically, is always the best question to ask.

Didn't Trump himself push to get these vaccines through?

And with regard to public polling on covid misinformation:

Quote:
More than three quarters (78%) of U.S. adults either believe or aren’t sure about at least one of eight false statements about the COVID-19 pandemic or COVID-19 vaccines, with unvaccinated adults and Republicans among those most likely to hold misconceptions, a new KFF COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor report shows.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of unvaccinated adults believe or are unsure about at least half of the eight false statements – more than three times the share of vaccinated adults (19%). Nearly half (46%) of Republicans believe or are unsure about at least half the statements, three times the share of Democrats (14%).

Not sure what they mean by misinformation but a large part of the information we have is still in the early stages of being verified. In many ways it's still not been determined what's Correlation and what's causation regarding many of the things going on with COVID.

And yes the death counts are likely not to be accurate as death certificates are not an accurate tool for actual causes of death, this has been long known by the NIH and they have published reports on it pre-COVID.

FWIW KFF is generally factual in what they report but as with any reporting what doesn't get reported could also be important but may hurt the the intentiional bias of the reporting.
