I just received a Speed Zone Camera ticket for going 40 in a 25 through a School Zone on Northern Blvd in Flushing. Completely understandable but I am confused why this was issued at 11:14 pm on a Friday night in the summer when there is no school in session. I thought school zone speed limits were only effective during school hours. This is a typical speed trap that you would find down south. No one has a chance. There were at least 4 other cars along side of me in the 3 second video. The ticket even says "School speed zone cameras are in effect year round on weekdays between the hours of 6am to 10pm. As I said, this was nearly 11:30 pm at night in the summer so I am not even within the school zone time frame. The speed limit signs say 40 so I did nothing wrong. I never would dispute a red light camera ticket but I am going to dispute this one.

School zones in NY are 24/7/365 - I got a ticket once on a Saturday night at 10 p.m. I had an internship at the time and my boss was a part time cop in a dinky upstate town and told me what to write to get out of the ticket. And no I don't remember - wish I did!

Interesting that you reference the south - school zones here where I live in NC are only enforced at the time schools are arriving and dismissing and are accompanied by a flashing light on the sign. I don't agree with that because school things happen at all hours of the day and night.

On August 1, 2022, the City of New York will begin issuing speed camera violations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. The City will operate speed cameras in 750 school speed zones.

They gotta make up that revenue for the 50% of office workers that are never going back.

The speed limit on Northern Boulevard has been 25 mph for a couple of years. I highly doubt they left up some old 40 mph signs by mistake. Check the sign again and if it is 40 mph take a picture and let us know where the sign is. BTW you probably should have posted this in the NYC forum.

How would anyone that does not live in the city know that school speed zones are 24/7. The signs out here on LI tell you the school hours (7am - 6pm). That means the normal speed limit applies all other times. There are not school events in the summer at 11 pm and if there were, it would not require slower speeds than normal. Wouldn't be 7 year olds crossing the street at midnite.

If the normal speed limit is 40 mph, it would not bother me as much. I will look next time. As I mentioned, there were about 5 of us in the few seconds of video there were. They must issue many thousands of tickets every day from this one camera.

The speed limit on ALL roads in NYC is now 25 MPH. Perhaps there are a few areas that are more than 25 MPH, but I would think that Northern Blvd. would be 25 MPH. And, just this month, NYC activated the speed cameras 24/7, so you have to keep to the limit all the time. As far as I know, there is a 10 MPH leeway, so you can technically go 35 MPH (or maybe it's 34 MPH).

The other cars in the video may or may not have gotten a ticket. They could have been going 35 mph or less while you were doing 40.

The default speed limit is 25 mph in NYC but there are some notable exceptions. Service roads to highways like the Grand Central Parkway and Long Island Expressway (Horace Harding Boulevard) are 30 mph. I guess the thinking is that as you are exiting a 50 mph highway you need some leeway to slow down.

If you’re going to drive in NYC you need to stay under 35 mph and leave the Waze app on at all times. Some school zones have a speed limit of less than 25, you do the math. Queens has the most cameras out of all the boros.
