My husband and I are looking to buy a house now that our coop in Long Beach has been sold and are confused as to whether we should stay in Long Beach or move to Oceanside. I know that we love Long Beach, but are concerned about the schools for when we have children. Does anyone know what the differences are in neighborhoods regarding the schools and community? We have done some research on greatschools.net and community websites, but I think we need to know information from the people who live in the neighborhoods. We hope to not have to move ever again! Thanks.
That's a tough one, I'll be honest. Long Beach is a nicer place to live (IMO) but Oceanside does have better schools. Oceanside is less diverse, and more heavily Jewish (if this matters to you either way).
House lot sizes in Oceanside are a bit bigger--not huge, still dominated by 60x100, but better than most of Long Beach. It is still fairly close to the beach and the other amenities you have in Long Beach.
The schools in LB really aren't that bad, particularly the elementary schools. I think the HS is better than it was a few years back. By the time you need to consider the upper grades (you don't have kids yet... so it'll be at least 13 years) many, many things will change.
I say you stay... If you love LB and already live there & know what you are dealing with.
Oceanside has good schools, Long Beach schools aren't that good. Oceanside homes tend to be bigger than small homes in Long Beach and homes in Oceanside actually have backyards, plus Oceanside is close so you can continue to enjoy the benifets of Long Beach.

To the original poster, if you already live in LB, you know that this is a generalization of the west end of Long Beach. To those who are not familiar with LB as a whole, the east end & center of town has some very large Victorian houses (sometimes known as Reynolds houses). My house in LB was on the typical LI 60x100 lot with a nice backyard & adequate front yard. If you desire waterfront property LB is the way to go, too.
Well, typically homes in Long Beach don't have a big backyard, the ones that do are fairly expensive and you can get more bang for your buck in Oceanside.
