I've also heard the horror stories about Verizon's customer service. I'm not fan of the Dolans, but my overall experience with the Optimum triple play has been good. The service has worked fine, and in the few instances it hasn't - my technical issues (cable goes out or whatever) have been resolved in one phone call.
If you're a big sports fan, Fios has the NFL network which is worth it for some people, but I don't think they have MSG in HD (correct me if I'm wrong).
the main draw for me to Fios would be the multi-room DVR...something Cablevision does NOT have.
I can't speak for Fios because when I had verizon they did not offer it yet but I had Verizon for phone and internet and switched to Time Warner cable (NYC) because they offered a better deal. I was never crazy about the verizon internet but this was 2003-2004. I can second or third the fact that verizon customer service though is terrible. Pray you have no issues. Tough to resolve as previous posters have mentioned. I even had trouble getting them to refund money when I switched. Their system just kept sending me bills with credits and I had called every month. It took alost a year to get 45 bucks back.
We currently have Fios - just the internet and phone service for $64.99 a month. The TV isn't available where we are (Lindehurst).
We don't use the phone as we have Vonage (I am from Ireland and call home daily, and my phone bill is $30 a month) - a tip is not to tell them this because if you mention Vonage to customer service they treat you like pond scum, LOL!
The internet has been great - though it does just go out every so often, it comes back on after a few minutes. I haven't noticed it discernibly faster than Optimum Online.
Customer service isn't stellar - when we returned a faulty router to them they charged us for it though they weren't supposed to, and had to jump through hoops to get it off our bill.
We're moving to a new place in Selden in a couple of weeks and had it set up with Verizon to to the triple play thing (their package with Direct TV not Fios TV). It wasn't until the end of as 45 minute call that the rep informed my husband that the internet service is DSL, not Fios. We have to have Fios, Vonage needs that or cable. She retorted that it was just as fast as cable, and had nothing to add about the Vonage problem.
So we have been with Fios for 6 months, but will be going back top cable - I'll let you know about the disconnection fees.
Also there are a lot of fees on the bill that you won't be able to make head nor tail of - but that's probably true with cable too.

It's interesting, Cablevision's campaign, sometimes stresses "NO LOCAL NEWS"...GOD, that Channel 12 is HORRIBLE !
