We just moved from Bayside to Plainview - so far we could not be happier. But I have no idea where my tap water comes from or how good it is for me and my family. I am trying to decide between a water filter on my sink or buying/renting a water cooler.
You can call your water district ( most probably plainview water district, but could be others if you live near the border) to get a water quality report. Water districts test their water frequently and the results are available for the public. http://www.oysterbaytown.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={FF1262B3-8D7B-4B77-8E08-2415694C7DBF}&DE={5D9BDC8C-F9FD-4707-AFAB-5D3F43A9C6E9}
If you are concerned, you can also test the water in your house by taking a sample and sending it to an independent lab ( like Environmental Testing & Research ). I actually did send my water for testing and the result was my water did not even need filtering.
I cant get myself to drink the LI tap water. Ever turn on your water around 5 am and get that terrible whiff of Chlorine? I do. What about every stinking house on LI pollutes their yard with chemicals, it makes me sick. So thats why I spend $30 a month on water. Oh well...I feel better in my head. lol.
I think filter will be the best option.... even bottled water may not be as pure as you think because they only have to meet the minimum % of spring water in the bottle and it may have contaminants in them, Some bottled water is just purified tap water with a few added minerals.... it is not easy on your wallet !!

Yup, Pepsi admitted that to their Dasani product.
Oops I should add that they admitted that in your point of purified tap water. They have not admitted that it was cheap.

Reason: Correction
All bottled water has to provide the source of origin the water came from and weather its spring water or purified "tap" water.
Ever notice how Poland Spring now lists 3 or 4 water springs? They were sued & lost b/c someone knew all their water did not come from the Poland Spring but rather a different spring a couple miles away. Crazy.
Once in a while I notice the chlorine smell.
I do notice the difference when I drink Nassau tap water and well water.
When I drink the well water out east, it tastes like when you get a mouth full of water from a freshwater lake.
I don't trust any of it tap-well-bottled.
Any one of them could be contaminated in some sort for one reason or another.
However, I'm not going to live my life in paranoia so I do drink tap water, but I lean towards bottled water.
I don't feel safe drinking well water out east and try to avoid it if possible.
