If you are young home buyers and thinking of settling down and raising a family in Huntington there is a rather large issue only one or two commenters have alluded to. Huntington village and immediate surrounding areas attend the Huntington schools. So does Huntington Station. Because of recent shootings and gang activities in Huntington Station the reputation of the school district has , unsurprisingly, declined. The local Catholic school in Huntington, St Pats, also, usurprisingly has a wating list and the high school, St Anthony's, is bursting at the seams.
There is a tendency by some (real estate agents, home sellers, etc) to gloss over this fact but if you are planning on raising a family in Huntington and sending your children to public schools this is an enormous concern.
That being said Huntington village is a cultural delight compared to the rest of Long Island and becoming (usnurprisingly) more affordable.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Huntington Union Free School District includes all or part of the Village of Huntington Bay, the Hamlet of Halesite, the Hamlet of Huntington, the Hamlet of Huntington Station, the Hamlet of West Hills, the Hamlet of Cold Spring Harbor and the Village of Lloyd Harbor.

I just bought a beautiful home in Halesite and I'm not the least bit concerned about Huntington school district. I think people are panicking and overreacting. But that's normal when it comes to the uninformed.

Just avoid the numbered streets by the train station along 110 and you should be fine....other than that Huntington is a great town with a lot going on.....bars, restaurants, nightlife, a nice park, and close to the LIRR and highways.

Other similar types of towns you may want to consider are Babylon, it is becoming a lot like Huntington.

I suppose the US Attorney's Office, police, Newsday and the shooting victims are/were similarly 'uninformed' of crimiinal activity within the Hunitngon School District boundaries:
Eastern District of New York

It is the gang violence (MS 13 and Latin Kings) in Huntington station that is particularly disconcernting. Apparently the 'Shotspotter Gunshot Location System" (Cooper the Exterminator: Ready to Rid Huntington Station of Crime | Village Tattler) should help in the crimefighting effort in Huntington Station.

I happen to think Halesite, Southdown, Huntington Bay, Bay Hills, etc etc are wonderful areas and Huntington Village is certainly terrific. Congratulations on your beautiful home!

The Town of Huntington is divided into villages (currently there are 4 villages) and hamlets (currently there are 15 hamlets), and neither Southdown nor Bay Hills is a listed village or hamlet, and thus they are sections/areas/neighborhoods within a village or hamlet in the Town of Huntington.

So the question is: in which village or hamlet are Southdown and Bay Hills located?
