I am beginning a 13 wk travel assignment in Whittier CA in mid March, I need to find a nice 1 bedroom apartment to live. My girlfriend and I have a Collie so pet friendly is important. My company furnishes housing cost so rent amount is a factor though not of main concern (1100-1400 a month). I would rank safety, convenience, and accessibility as most important factors. Any imput will be appreciated.

The best area (as in safety) in Whittier, is East Whittier, but not that accessible to the freeway - maybe a 15 min ride to the freeway. Uptown Whittier (a little more accessible to the freeway), near Whittier College is also a good area, however the further east, the better (east of Painter towards Whittier Blvd) and also towards the Whittier Hills (Beverly Blvd/Greenleaf, etc is sweet!) And there are Pet friendly apartments w/fees, and your convienently located to everything.

Stay away from West Whittier, South Whittier, & probably parts of North Whittier not that great.

Its a beautiful city, but unfortunately in the years past some parts have gone downhill....Stay away from apartments near Mar Vista and College, not only undesirables roaming around, but alot of college students and noise, they are young & having fun, but they tend to be on the noisey side.....

Also one more thing, rent from $1300-$1400 (& unfortunately higher) you are more likely in a good complex & better area, by experience I saw that the cheap rent(s) usually got faulty apts, management & neighbors

I'm also thinking that uptown Whittier and near Whittier College is your best option.

Yea, definitely Uptown by the college. I grew up in West Whittier, that is exactly where the 605 fwy runs through, would be very accessible, but I strongly advise Not to. (although some areas are quiet, as far as apartments/rentals go, and the nearby shopping - Norwalk/Washington Blvd----its sadly gotten ghetto throughout the years, same for the Whittier School District).

Thinking about checking apartments in Chino Hills and Yorba Linda, any thoughts?

Those areas are quite the commute from Whittier.

What is it that made you think those would be good areas to stay in? I am curious because Whittier is pretty much fine and even if for some odd reason it was not, there are other communities affordable to you that are nicer and more upscale than Chino Hills and Yorba Linda.
