There was another place noted by the Farm, as a place of burial "Potters Field" I researched this also, Potters Field is in Downey, going with Evergreen.
I contacted the Farm for records for 1929, they said they had none. I also contacted Downey Historical Society, they had none for my grandmother.
Hope this helps and good luck on your search. Barb

During the Great Depression, which would have included the years 1929 and 1930, the Los Angeles County Poor Farm was also used to house those who were indigent due to the Depression. While living there these people could cultivate their own vegetable gardens to feed themselves and their families.

By the way, in 1931 the county poor farm was renamed "Sunny Acres" in order to make it sound less intimidating.

After reading your post, I became interested. I'm a native of LA and currently live in Downey. The LA county poor farm was here from 1880's to the 1930's, it them became Rancho Los Amigos Hospita. Downey only has one small cemetery and it is too small for county us. But I found the following sites:

Downey Cemetery District at Downey City Hall (562) 904-7246

There are lists by name and date of death. Some back to the early 1900s. There are several small cemeteries in the area that may be helpful.

In the late 40's and early 50's their was a small cemetary at the northwest corner of Gardendale and Garfield (which is/would have been in Downey) - was always told it was where many from the County Poor Farm were buried. It was just south of where the American Legion Hall was built (can remember the bodies being relocated, maybe when the Legion Hall was built ???)
Wonder if the American Legion would have any information on what was on that property originally - and/or where the remains might have been moved to. This may have also been around the time that they widened Garfield in that area but not sure.

Believe in later years they built the Humane Center (dog pound) and misquito abatement buildings across Garfield on the northwest corner.

I recently found a relative listed as an inmate on the County Farm in Downey, California. I was wondering if there was any other information I could find about him. I didn't find a death record for him in California so I was wondering if anyone can help me with it. How can I tell if he was just indigent or if he was a criminal? I appreciate any help anyone can give me about this.

I have a relative who died on the "farm" in 1932. He was buried in Potters Field which today is part of Woodlawn Memorial Park in Compton. The section known as the Northside is the old Potter's Field. I found this on Findagrave.com while researching my genealogy.
