Or you can simply stroll through the walkways beside the canals. There are some Italian and other ethnic restaurants a walk away from this area to enjoy.
There are no canals in Naples, although there is hellacious traffic that would even shock Angelenos, pretty high levels of petty theft (although low levels of violent crime by US standards - despite Western Europeans considering it dangerous, if violent crime in LA ever got down to the level of Naples whatever police chief or mayor were in power would be considered heroes), corrupt Camorra influenced government, a very lively genuine working class culture, superb museums, a great football/soccer culture, and some of the most down to earth people in the world. It's a down and dirty port city that takes pride in its endearing seediness and wonderful food. BTW, probably due to its levels of poverty and unemployment, it has fewer immigrants than just about any other city in Western Europe. It also is one of the more pro-American places in Europe as so many of its sons and daughters left and made good in the New World back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Naples in Long Beach is nothing like the real thing. The best comparison I'd make in California would probably be the old, pre-gentrification, working class white ethnic San Francisco of bygone days, even including the hills.

Good assessment of the original Napoli, a place our Roman hosts even joked about as "completely crazy," the local (wacko driving) Romans being afraid to drive there (!) It's a very exaggeratedly, effusively Italian place- crazy is a good description. Trash strike had piles of trash 2 stories high everywhere! We were there for my husband's punk band reunion tour of Italy in 2003, and the Naples audiences were the very best- out of control in their enthusiasm like a tough Detroit audience that's been won over. And yes, the most modest Neapolitan food is better than the best food most any place else.

I am thinking our OP meant allusions to Abbot Kinney's Venice by the sea...

You pronounce the word below: PEN IS? If not, it doesn't rhyme with "Venice"... Just an FYI...

No it isnt. Omaha Nebraska had Italian immigrants and for some reason, Los Angeles does not and never has. Plus, "Little Italys" in other places you rarely find people who actually speak Italian. So you really dont get the sense of actually being part of that culture.

There's a lot of Italian influence in the architecture of many (old and new) homes and other structures in Southern California, as well.
