Happy people are too busy doing happy things to hang out on Internet forums and share happy thoughts. Forums are all about b**ching and whining and complaining. That's what makes them run. Take away the negativity and you have empty space.

Few people in LA, even in (or especially) the glitzy neighborhoods, are happy. It's a tough place to live and grow up in. For example, driving half a mile to do a simple errand often turns into a stressful, life or death ordeal. You really always have to be on your guard here. That being said, there are numerous benefits to living here too.

People in the LA forum seem negative, because a majority of the posts we reply to are along the lines of this: I don't have a job but i have a AA degree in business, and want to move to LA to get a job in finance. I don't have a car, so can i take public transportation from El Segundo to Down Town LA daily? This will only be 20 minutes or so, right? Also, my budget is $750 per month, including utilities. I shouldn't have a problem getting a 5 bedroom house with that, right? By the way, where should I live? I want somewhere with A+ schools, no crime and of course close to transportation!!!

All the forums on this site have the same issue. There are miserable/unhappy people everywhere. Life is not only what you make it, some people just fit into some places better than others. Someone suggested a forum for me to find positive thoughts/resources for cities and I forget where it was. If I remember, I will share the name with you.

I hate to write this, I really do, but I noticed people in LA (since I've moved back) seem guarded, big walls around them, less spontaneously engaging in public, less cheerful or something.
People I work with (and it could be the type of people I work with, engineers, the nature of our work) walk down the hall and don't smile, they don't want to make eye contact, etc. Maybe it's because I just moved here from Alabama where to me, a lot more people were friendly and relaxed - no traffic, no financial stress.
Most people in my vanpool say the minimal hello in the morning. I am a total joker clown type person and it is difficult to get a laugh out of them. Fortunately my neighbors are really cool, TGIF weekend partiers with lots of kids so maybe since we all have kids we have that in common so we're more social.
One thing I did notice, is when I initiate the hello in the hallway people (after they recover from the shock that some stranger said hello) do smile back and appreciate it - especially the chicks.
