I don't know the area at all. I also don't want a long commute. maybe 30mins. What areas should I look at? I could prolly go up to 2k for 1 bdr, only if I really need to tho.

thx,
Derek

You won't need $2k for a 1 bedroom, unless you want something very nice, or with an ocean view. $1500-1600 is realistic, you can find $1300-1400, but you'll sacrifice things like dishwasher, parking, etc.

30 mins of LAX leaves a lot of nice areas open to you. You can live anywhere in Santa Monica (i commute SM to El Segundo, south lax campus every day - 20-40 min drive, surface streets). You can look in el segundo, which will give you an ideal commute. Playa Del Rey is close as well as pretty much anything in West LA. You can also live in the "South Bay", which starts with Manhattan Beach and goes south. Obviously the further south, the longer your commute.

Do you care about schools?

Its impossible to pinpoint an exact location, but you have TONS of options, especially with your "realistic" budget.

In theory, you can look anywhere west of the 405 freeway and be perfectly safe.

You are right in the middle of the South Bay area and the Westside of LA. I would definitely suggest Manhattan Beach or Santa Monica for places to live in. Those are some of my favorite areas in LA County. Manhattan Beach definitely has a more laid back beach vibe and isn't as busy as Santa Monica is. But if you are looking for more of a city living type feel and more of an "LA" type of vibe then I would definitely suggest SM over Manhattan. Really though you can't go wrong with either area.
