I'd like to take my GF to Catalina for about 4-5 days for a little vacation. She has never been and I use to go to Boy Scout Camp there (Camp Emerald Bay) years ago and fell in love with the fishing, snorkeling, and other water activities. Has anyone been there recently? And how do I go about this? Ferry and hotel situation? Should I go into Avalon or Two Harbors? Thanks.

4 or 5 days on catalina might be a bit excessive, it's not that exciting of a place.

Avalon. Just google Catalina and you will find all details about getting there, places to stay, and activities.

I agree with BRinSM; four days would be too much for most visitors. Research hotels on the web, keeping in mind that they're not quite that nice as they appear. You can select your tour packages at the same time, and make reservations for snorkeling. They rent everything you would need for fishing and snorkeling on the pier at Avalon, but many visitors bring their own equipment. You can also print a discount coupon for the boat ride fare.

Don't forget to bring a gun or bow so you can hunt the buffalo.

They do keep the buffalo population at a level amount. When I lived there you could always get a buffalo burger. I have a friend who goes the the island yearly for deer and pig hunting.

Somewhat oddly, whereas it is OK to hunt deer and boar, it is beyond sin to catch an orange fish (Garibaldi). Throw that sucker back before anybody sees!

You can hunt but usually a guided trip. There really is not many people on Catalina, Avalon is a square mile in size.

I used to just go over to Pebbley beach, south of Avalon and shore fish. By the time my bbq was ready I had something landed. There is great scuba diving all around the island, very clear visibility. Next to the Casino is a park with 8 sunken ships to play in.
