We are a small family, with one on the way, who are moving in a few months. I see some houses in Northridge that look pretty affordable and the neighborhoods seem pretty decent. Havent made the trip up to see the area yet but want to get an idea from the natives. Good place for a family? We dont need nightlife and boring as it may sound, I enjoy the suburbs. Husband's office is in Woodland Hills so that's not a bad commute (or is it?)
Any tips or info would be appreciated!

Parts of Northridge are very nice and some parts are not-so-nice. Generally, you would want to stay north of Nordhoff and west of Balboa IMO.

Thanks Jebby, this is the kind of info I am looking for. Areas to stay out of. In general, is it safe?

I lived at Tampa and Rinaldi years ago. I was there a few weeks ago and its still nice, clean and suburban. I noticed there's a new Whole Foods at that intersection. Townhouse and singlle family homes all over the area around Tampa and Rinaldi. Rush hour traffic can be horrendous though. The area is minutes from Northridge Fashion Center, restaurants, movie houses and big box stores.

Stay away from anywhere near Parthenia. That was a bad area even when many of the bad areas of the Valley were nice areas.

Its south of Parthenia where things get bad.

Isn't that technically Porter Ranch? I thought Northridge's northern boundary was Devonshire St.

there are no direct freeway routes between northridge and woodland hills so your husband would be stuck taking surface streets for miles (read: no fun). you may consider looking at woodland hills or west hills, both are also nice family oriented areas that are much cheaper than other desirable areas in the city. schools in the west valley also tend to be the best in all of LAUSD.

"The best schools in LAUSD" is similar to "the best terrorist groups in the Middle East"
