During Carmageddon, I'm going to try to get onto the freeway either on foot or on my bike. It'll be fun to play on the empty freeway.

Does it make sense to leave town by Thursday evening, return on Tuesday?

Monday morning when they reopen the roads I will be surprised if the traffic isn't still backed up into San Diego County.

I'm inadvertently taking the Friday before as a vacation day, and then after some serious thought, decided I don't trust the powers that be to have the freeway open as scheduled on Monday morning, so I'm also taking Monday off just as a precaution.

I have a party place in Tarzana that is affected...I only have 2 parties scheduled that whole weekend. Hopefully people will manage to get there! The freeway closure is costing me business.

Get a grip, people. It's not the end of the world. Our freeways were a mess after the Northridge earthquake and we managed. Or have you all forgotten? We'll all survive the upcoming 405 project, too. This closure, although inconvenient to us all, will provide an excellent controlled exercise for CalTrans, law enforcement, fire and EMS. This will enable multiple agencies the opportunity to work together in a unified command to properly deploy personnel in order to mitigate any potential pitfalls an actual disaster would present.

It's not like you will not be able to get to or from The Valley to L.A. or the coast. It will just take a little planning. You can route over Coast Hwy., Topanga Canyon Blvd., Roscomare Rd., Valley View, Benedict Canyon, Coldwater Canyon, Laurel Canyon as ways to get around the closure, depending on where you're trying to go. There are several surface street alternatives on the Los Angeles side of the pass that can be used in lieu of the 405.

SloRoller, you don't think other locals will also think of taking the canyon roads?

What I can see happening: The media is going to report that everything is lighter than normal, and that so far Carmageddon isn't happening. Then a bunch of people will say, "Oh, great! Think I'll go out after all", and later regret that decision.

Someone mentioned to me the big Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is that weekend, so they're heading up to SF with friends to shop and make it a weekend getaway!
