Default live in El Segundo L.A. or Laguna Niguel O.C.? trying to decide

Anyone have experience living in El Segundo and/or in Laguna Niguel?
I have done online research and trying to decide a place. I have visited both. Both seem safe and have good Middle/High schools. (would love to live in Manhattan Beach-much very high price for an apartment). I like Laguna Niguel because it's away from LA and the heavy! traffic. But I think El Segundo will nice because it's within 20 miles of LA whenever I want to go to an audition once in awhile. Also, O.C. you get more for your money including washer/dryer but in L.A. county you pay double already high or 3 times to have a washer/Dryer.

El Segundo is only 2 miles from Compton and Inglewood, any problems with crime spilling over to ES?

El Segundo has a very low crime rate and you needn't worry about spill over. That said, completely different vibe than Laguna Niguel. Need more specifics on what you're looking for.

Totally apples and oranges.

That being said, I'd prefer El Segundo.

I work in ES and really like it. I'd totally live there. They have a top notch police department, very little crime.

here's what it comes down to for me. How often do you need to commute for auditions? If infrequent, live in LN. If frequent, move to ES. all factors being equal, LN is a much better city. Most ES residents complain about the refinery, sewage plant, and/or airport noise. It seems to be one or another. I have worked in ES for 16 years and would never buy nor rent there. They have great services like the police force, which is expected for a city so tiny and secluded. I think the police are bored most of the time, although residents have noticed crime picking up in recent years (drug store/gas station burglaries, etc), so maybe crime is spilling over. I think ES is relatively safe and has good schools, but has many factors you should seriously contemplate. If you have to move to LA, try torrance, or west LA neighborhoods for reasonable rents

If you can afford Laguna Niguel then you can afford Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach or Redondo Beach (as well as El Segundo)....just saying.

FYI, Compton is more than 2 miles away from El Segundo. El Segundo is fairly safe (but, of course, it also has a history of being "sundown town")

If you are going to auditions "once in a while" what are you doing for work and where? Do you work from home?

Manhattan Beach is very dense.
Laguna Niguel might be too boring for a younger single person (but not an older single or divorced person).

What type of housing are you looking for? Rent an apartment, A room? buying a condo or house?
Married? Kids?
Budget?

laguna niguel is way cheaper than any coastal community in the south bay, el segundo included. $500k will get you a new-ish detached home in laguna niguel. I'm not sure you could find a 2br condo for that price in el segundo. i do agree that the noise is bad though and the smell can be quite a put off as well.

Very true. El Segundo has the airport (LAX) on the North border, the oil refinery on the South border and the Hyperion Water Treatment Plant (handles the sewage for most of Los Angeles on the West (coastal border).
