Coming from the south on any of the main streets, at what numbered streets do you consider the beginning of "downtown" L.A. So lets say your driving on San Pedro St...at what numbered street do you consider the start of downtown...not just san pedro but any of the main streets?

10 to the south, 110 to the west, 101 to the north, 5 to the east.

To the OP...those numbers in JohnG72's post refer to FREEWAYS...not streets.

Just in case you didn't know.

For practical purposes, I agree with this.

I don't consider the 5 to be the eastern edge. Depending on how far south you are the 5 can be pretty far. I'm also more and more starting to consider Chinatown and Union Station to be in downtown. Also west of the 110. Downtown is changing/growing. If you walk around you don't use the freeways so much to define it.

I'd say 16th is the south edge of DTLA.

[there are no precise boundaries that I'm aware of]

I disagree. Freeways are a significant presence around LA. They define physical space and are an easy means for defining the limits of an area regardless of one's mode of travel (except for maybe a helicopter).

Per Wikipedia, it's the 10, 110, 101, and the LA River.

Downtown Los Angeles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I would have said the 5 though (not a big difference).
