On a superficial level, something I have always thought differentiates the average NoCal denizen from that of SoCal is the greater amount of attention given to nature/the environment, sustainability, being eco-friendly, going outdoors, and eating organic/locally-sourced food. And as others have said, the NoCal-SoCal "rivalry" is nonexistent in SoCal, and what little you hear about is completely perpetuated by SF transplants.

I always get a kick out of this:

Originally from SoCal, but I've now been in NoCal for a decade, I got accused of plagiarism when writing an environmental document and I had to describe the highways of the state....LOL....so true, I was writing THE 118, THE 405, whereas people up here just say 50 or 80. I had to prove to my bosses that I was from SoCal. Nutters, they are!

San Fransisco is the only main "NoCal" city, because San Jose feels very much like a SoCal city..

People from SoCAL have southern accents. People from NorCAL don't!

The SJ-like city in SoCal containing the hi-tech economic engine of the world is...what?

San Jose seems to me like a NorCal city. San Francisco seems like a east coast city. Of course this is due to it's development in the 19th century and the limited space it has to build on (plus it's unique geography, But SJ a Socal city? Where do you get that impression from?

The main difference is that birds of a feather tend to flock together in LA more than the Bay... obviously that's still true to an extent in the Bay, but in LA its out of the norm to see, say, asian and black teenagers hanging out together and to an extent even black and hispanic teens... not so in the Bay. As far as dating goes LA doesn't have the same inhibitions but in terms of social circles, I'd say the rule holds.

I'm not saying the Bay is a race-consciousless wonderland either, but it's worth mentioning as a significant cultural difference.

I think San Jose has a layout (suburban sprawl), architecture, and general feel that is somewhat similar to the San Fernando Valley. It's sort of a more affluent and better educated SFV with somewhat cooler weather. The 2 areas aren't mirror images of each other, but there are some similarities. Just my opinion.
