I am from the midwest and want to move to Santa Monica or Brentwood. I would like to find a roommate, and have a couple questions; what should I expect to pay for a room rental in a very nice place? I don't mean ocean front or anything, but I do want to live in a very safe, very nice apartment. I know a one bedroom would easily be over 2k, but I am hoping room share would be less, hopefully no more than 1200... is that realistic? Also, I know job outlook is bleak in general right now, so I am wary of that and do have savings, but hope to secure a position fairly quick (I have a BA in Marketing). Any tips/hints or answers to my questions is greatly appriciated. Thanks!

$2k is on the higher side of rent for a 1 bedroom, unless you're looking for something very well done, or with extras (w/d in unit, for example). Normal rents for SM are 1400-1800 for a 1 bedroom; similar in brentwood, maybe slightly less. You can find 1 bedrooms in both areas for $1200-1300, but i wouldn't classify them as 'nice', as you asked for. You can find studios in the 1100-1300 range.

I would strongly recommend finding a job before moving - a BA in marketing is not a golden ticket, especially in LA.

Assuming you're not going to share one bedroom, you're looking for a 2-bedroom apartment for no more than $2400 mo.? Have you looked at ads? Considered talking with a property management company (deals with rentals)? There should be several in the area, whether independent offices or parts of larger real estate offices. Are you going to rent a 2-bedroom apartment and then hope you find a roommate who won't move out before your lease is up (and who hopefully will be honest, clean, etc.)? Or are you going to look for someone who needs a roommate (eg., ads, Craigslist, etc.?). I'd certainly look at one-bedroom apartments, as suggested above, before deciding on relying on a roommate you don't know.

Why did you narrow down all of the possible places in the region to live to Brentwood and Santa Monica, and how will you leave if you don't find a job? Or what if you find a job but it's a long ways from Santa Monica/Brentwood (i.e., a killer commute)?

There are many students who room share, craigslist is your best bet. Coming from out of state will make it kind of tricky. If you are coming for school check with them, many times they will have housing info.
