Hello,

My wife and I are graduating from law school in the midwest and we're moving back to California in a few months.

The problem is we got jobs on the opposite sides of the planet (relatively speaking) from each other. She's going to be working in Santa Monica and I'm going to be working in Irvine (near the Spectrum).

We are trying to find a good place to live that is safe and has good schools for our infant son. Also, we would like to be able to have minimal commute times if possible. We are both willing to take public transportation if possible. Currently we are looking at Anaheim Hills, but I'm worried the commute from AH to SM is going to be too long for my wife.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

live closer to whomever has a better job then let the other start looking for jobs near the closer work location. i'm not kidding! there is no way where both of you can have a manageable commute and buses, trains aren't really an option unless you live in downtown LA (which may be doable). the only other option i can think of is torrance, but that would probably give each of you a 1 hour commute each way. yikes!

Live in Santa Monica and commute to Irvine.

It would be easier on your wife.

No need for both to suffer in traffic.

How long of a drive in traffic will it be to and from Irvine in the mornings and evenings?

+1

If your son is still an infant, your wife most likely wants to spend as much time as possible with him bonding. Just be prepared to leave extra early in the morning for the long drive south, preferably before 6am. If you're lucky you'll be home by 9:30 at night

Live in Santa Monica, and commute to Irvine. Most traffic goes in the opposite direction, so it shouldn't be too bad. Maybe 45-60 mins to get there.

Apparently you've never driven south on the 405 in the morning through Long Beach and OC.

Sorry pal I have and do. Depends when you leave. I leave for work at 8.45am from Santa Monica and get to Huntington Beach by 9.20am. Earlier probably is worse, I agree, Moderator cut: rude

Funny how it always looks like a parking lot in the morning when I'm on it.

nowadays, traffic starts to get ugly on the 405 at the garden grove freeway junction. apparently, a lot of people commute to Irvine for work now.

also, it depends on where you want to raise your kid In my opinion, Irvine is one of the best places for raising a family in SoCal. It's well-planned (master-planned city), and it's so safe it's scary. Also, it's near some expensive areas like Newport Coast, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, etc.

But living in Irvine means a long commute for your wife. I would try Torrance.
