Get a good realtor. Walk around the neighborhoods, parks, go into the supermarkets and libraries. There is a world of difference between Diamond Bar and Chino Hills, for example, in terms of schools, people, education, interests, etc. These people will be both yours and your children's neighbors and friends, possibly for many, many years. Check out the schools yourselves; talk to other parents. Don't look at those greatschools links; they're not accurate. Good luck.

Thank you for this information. Could you please clarify a little? Do you feel that Chino Hills is more family friendly then DB? More upscale? Thanks.

I wouldn't say Chino Hills is more family friendly than DB. Chino Hills, Walnut and DB all have great amenities for families and great schools. It's probably going to boil down to what's the most convenient, and where you find a home that best suits your needs.

Chino Hills has been bustling with new development in the past several years. There's a lot of great shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. They keep building new shopping centers too. There are a lot of great parks in Chino Hills too. Compared to the other two, the commute to Ontario should be a very comfortable one from here (10+ miles), but the commute to Fullerton/Whittier might be more of a hassle (20+ miles).

Diamond Bar doesn't have as many new shopping centers or conveniences, but it's close enough to Chino Hills and Walnut that it might not be a big issue. We lost our aging movie theater a while back, but we did get a Target. There are a lot of grocery stores and nice, smaller family run business around town. The schools are great and there are a lot of parks/walking trails. You could afford an older, but still spacious home in The Country on your budget.

There are some very nice, newer homes in your price range in Walnut. They also have great schools and parks. They also built up new-ish shopping centers on the border of Industry and Walnut with plenty of shopping and food options.

Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills are great areas too. Both have excellent schools and amenities, but you start getting further from both Ontario and Whittier down there. I would say all of these communities are fairly similar upper-middle class suburbs, and you could probably be happy in either one.
