i'm new to the los angeles area and I am looking for some of the best places to camp around here.... I am located in the san gabriel valley area, but I would be willing to travel anywhere in the county. I know most camp sites are pretty strict about having a camp fire around here and all, but if you guys know of any that do allow it, please let me know! thanks a lot

Since you're already in the San Gabriel Valley, go on out to the San Bernardino National Forest. The camping is better there - especially in the Big Bear area. And it's closer to you than some parts of LA county. I'd avoid the Angeles National Forest as it is close enough to the city to attract uh, how can I put this, "unseemly" characters. If you simply can't cross the county line, check out the Mt. Pinos area near Frazier Park and I think still in the county, albeit the extreme northern section. This is the Los Padres National Forest, part of which is in Ventura County. But these are mountain areas and the campgrounds aren't open during winter. If you want to camp now, I'd suggest, once again, leaving the county for the desert - maybe Joshua Tree National Park. But it would be better in spring, once things start to bloom (the desert is great in spring).
