You answered my question! No wonder I don't see the big deal people make about sales tax. Groceries are not taxed!! As food/groceries is most people peoples biggest expenses, food not being taxed makes a huge difference.

?? It doesn't cost that much to register a car in California either. At least for me it doesn't. It was under $100.

There's no income tax in Texas because of the oil industry in Texas. If it weren't for that, there would be.

We have met California's enemy, and it is - Texas

THOMAS D. ELIAS,

THE scene was the waiting area for a flight to Los Angeles from what was then called Houston Intercontinental Airport (the airfield had not yet been renamed for ex-President George Bush pere). The date was mid-2000, before most Americans had heard of either Osama bin Laden or Barack Obama. The waiting area teemed with young men milling around in expensive suits making jokes at California's expense. These were almost exclusively Texans employed by big energy companies like Enron and Dynegy and Reliant or their law firms.

Interesting article, albeit pretty poorly written.

Mid-2000s and most Americans had never heard of Osama Bin Ladin?

I know people don't like hearing positive things about Florida .. but their sales tax is 6% (Broward County) ,no state income taxes , and you can also buy oceanview condos for a fraction of the price or rent them for a fraction of the price. So this seems to be an even better deal than Texas in some ways. Their property taxes are higher than L.A though.

Mid-2000, as in the middle of the year 2000.

If this is bad, just wait. I don't think this recession is over by a long shot. I think the worst may be coming down the pike.

I don't see how the city of L.A's finances or those of CA are in good order, despite what the politicians say.

9% is a high tax considering the cost of property is extremely high and we also have a state income tax too.

Also I'm pretty sure most don't feel we are getting a great return for our money in regards to city services

Does anybody here think LAUSD is one of the best school districts in the nation?

Are the roads some of the best?

Paying the most money doesn't always give you 'the best'

Its a '99 Subaru Forester with over 200,000 miles on it. So yeah, maybe that makes a difference. But yeah, my annual renewal was under 100.
