Hi all,

I have been planning to move to LA (from NYC) for quite some time, and it looks like I might actually be in a position to do so by next year (probably summer or fall).

I am interested in the west side of LA, the safer areas, but also, obviously the more expensive ones.

Is it even possible to find a decent one bedroom for around $1500 or less a month in LA? From what I have been seeing, it doesn't seem possible. I am also interested in being near some kind of public transportation and stores, I don't want to be where I can only drive to these things.

It's discouraging...but I'm not ready to give up on it yet. I am not sure of where I will be working either, which is another issue, but I'm hoping to find something where I can be making a comparable salary to what I make here in NYC. I work in law and my boyfriend is in healthcare.

Am I best off contacting a realtor out there to see if there is anything in our price range?

I would appreciate any info/advice...and thanks so much in advance.

Easy to find a place with that budget. Without a solid location of employment you won't get much help. I'm curious about commute times of people from NYC, door to door how long does it take you to get to work with public transportation?

It's funny you ask

I live on Staten Island and work in Manhattan and takes an hour or more for me to get to work sometimes. This is by express bus.

I have been...but from what I can see, the prices are very high and out of my budget (at least for areas I've looked).

I'm curious, what do you pay for rent in New York?

You shouldn't be having problems finding an apartment for that price. Check out Curbed LA, they just posted some apartment listings in the $1300 range yesterday.

Until you have jobs lined up and know exactly the locations you will be working in, your search is pointless.

You're not going to want to live in West LA if you find jobs in Pasadena.

As the old saying goes "your putting the cart before the horse".

I pay $1,250...that's with nothing included..I pay my own electric and gas, which can be very pricey here...particularly electric (ConEd).

Okay. That's not bad.

As I said before, check out Curbed LA. They post "What such and such will get you in LA" articles with apartment listings and they just posted another one yesterday.

Ok I will check it out thanks..

Also, I agree with the notion that I should really just try to find work first...I am moving out there with an inheritance, but not a huge one, and certainly not something I want to use up...I need to have something lined up before I move there.
