I use a spring suit regularly in Newport/Huntington Beach in December...the good part about beaches in the winter is that all of the tourists are gone and you can have the beach to yourself a lot of the time. But yes, it is pretty gross after it rains!

do you use a spring suit to dive?

i only use a spring suit if i plan to surf. when i dive a spring suit is like an invitation to hypothermia.

then again i'm anemic.. so i can only use open cells to surf in the winter.. that's why i said if he gets cold easily. i wouldn't use a spring in the winter.

personally i get cold.. i wouldn't get into our water with less than 5mm open cell.

P.S. it's SO gnarly after a storm.

i like to look at storm surf, i won't swim in that crap.

I use it to surf. Yes, it's cold, but using a full wetsuit is cold as well. If you're going in the water...get in, get numb, and you'll be fine.

yea, wetsuits don't help THAT much. i still get that little heart stopping shock whenever i get into our water- even with my wetsuit on.

i do wish our water was a teeny bit warmer. i mean, it doesn't have to be jamaica warm, but a happy medium would be cool.

Still cold. This isn't Florida. Our currents come down from Alaska.

Florida, ha! The state of 101% humidity! Mosquitos the size of small sheep! Rednecks galore! But hey, they got an ocean

Surfing is the one thing I swore I would do before I die. I gotta lose about 50 pounds though (working on it)
Think I might try to find someone to help instruct me on the basics.

Florida has a lot of private beaches now. They didn't have that many when I lived there (20+ years ago) but now it seems like everybody thinks they own the beach. The Geffen story made me smile. Guess he should have bought that extra piece of land?

California water is very cool all year round. That's why we don't get hurricanes. But that is also why there are Great White sharks in these waters. Be careful if you surf where the sea lions hang out!

We do have dolphins though, and it's fun to swim when they're nearby.
