So... it's better now? I lived right in the middle of early 90s LA. Not much happened to me (I certainly a few scares), but I heard the overnight/weekend news at school, and I went to bed constantly hearing gunshot "pop" sounds outside of my window. I haven't lived in LA since (not by choice, that's just how my life turned out), so I wasn't aware that the violence leveled off.

Yes, much better. The homicide rate in LA in 2014 is a fraction of what it was in the 1980's and early 1990's. LA's drop in violent crime is similar to declines in other big cities such as New York.

Mayor Vilaragrosa reports that the murder rates dropped to 1950s levels. It may have been Happy Days but they had a lot of weapons trained veterans in the general population.

He is no longer mayor. Eric Garcetti is the mayor now.

Sure but there hasn't been a rebound of violence since he termed out of office.. When I hear the news about gang killings all eyes seem to be on Chicago these days.

Yes, true. Ok got you. In your post you said "reports" as if he was still Mayor. No worries, never mind.

As many problems as there were I still wax nostalgic for those days. For me, "those days" included 1981 - 1994. The earlier part I lived there the latter part I was a "part timer" nominally domiciled in the Bay Area but still working in LA and environs extensively.

I keep hearing that there had been a resurgence of crime in LA. A policeman told me that yes crime is still lower than then the 90s but LA is seeing a spike since the last mayor left. The cop was predicting crime and gangs to make a return.

I hope he's wrong.
