Hello,

I've been lurking for the past few weeks and figured it was time to try and get some answers.

I'm coming to LA/Orange County for 5d/4n in September and trying to plan out my trip. Usually when I go to new cities I try to blend in and enjoy the town as a local, but on this trip I plan on being a real tourist (Camera in hand, I love LA hat, tour bus participant, etc) Im staying in LA for 3 nights without a car and then renting a car and driving to OC for a night before I head back to LAX the next afternoon.

I would like to stay somewhere where I can see the tourist attractions and still get to Venice Beach/Santa Monica for day. I plan on going out every night as well to clubs/bars and also would like to meet some California girls and women

I want to see the following:

Hollywood (Walk of Fame, Chinese Theater, maybe take a tour bus around for a few hours, Hollywood Sign, etc)
Beverly Hills
Movie/Network Studios
Downtown LA
Venice Beach/Santa Monica
Orange County
Malibu

Food is not a priority for me and neither are museums. I just want to see the tourist areas and meet people.

Where's the best place to stay without a car for one, and how feasible is this plan in the timeframe I have?

That is a lot in four nights but you can probably do most or all in a very abbreviated fashion. If you want to stay without a car your best bets are: downtown LA, Hollywood or Santa Monica.

Kind of hard to see Malibu without a car or a very long bus ride (Orange County too). If you are over 25 I'd consider renting a car for one day or two. It is not that expensive to rent a car in the U.S.

I'd first stay at a hotel in Hollywood a night or two. There are tour busses that go from hotel to the attractions like Universal City, etc. Most of the nightlife/clubs are located in that area as well.

Then stay in Santa Monica for a night or two. Drive down to OC., then return to LA for departure.

I'm going to go out on the limb and say you should stay in Koreatown. Pretty central to everything. You can take the subway to downtown L.A. and hollywood pretty easily. Plenty of places to be late night, and you can even cab it pretty easily to downtown and hollywood if need be. The Grove is very reachable...even bikeable. I think the Line hotel in ktown rents bikes, which is a pretty cool way to see the city. The longer trek will be to santa monica, but that's going to be the case from pretty much anywhere unless you stay on the westside. But if you schedule one day out there, you can take the metro bus on a straight-line shot on wilshire to santa monica and it'll be ok. In fact, you could probably stop off in beverly hills on the way and walk around a bit.

Ktown, baby.

IMHO, OC is too far for such a short trip. Besides Disneyland, I can't think of anything in OC that is unique to that area that you couldn't experience in LA. The culture is slightly different, but not by much. OC is also fairly large, so if you do head down there, make sure you know exactly where you want to be so you're not spending all your time driving around.

Also, stop by San Juan Capistrano and visit the mission there. Have lunch down the street and then check out antiques at the Old Barn.

The subway (redline) goes directly from Hollywood or Downtown LA to Universal Studios, if that is on the OP's agenda. No need for a tour bus for that attraction if he/she stays close to a redline/purple line stop.

I agree with this. From Wilshire and Western one can access the Big Blue bus system to Santa Monica plus one has the subway to go downtown.
